https://www.schools.nyc.gov/get-involved/students/working-papers

Any minor between 14 and 17 who would like to apply for the working papers can download and print the application and follow the instructions below.

Please bring the following to the main office:

  1. Your birth certificate, state-issued photo ID, driver’s license, OR passport (official identification to provide proof of age)
  2. Your school ID card
  3. A letter or note from your Primary Care Provider (PCP)–aka your regular Doctor–stating you are physically fit to work.
  4. Part I of the APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT CERTIFICATE completed (remember to have a parent or guardian sign it!)

14 & 15-year-olds,

Your working papers are blue. You are not allowed to work in a factory.

16 & 17-year-olds,

Your working papers are green. You are permitted to work in a factory. You cannot work around specific machines, do construction work, help on a motor vehicle, clean, oil, wipe, or adjust belts on machinery.

Remember:

  • Your employer must keep employment certificates on file while you are an employee.
  • When you turn 16, you must get your green working papers.
  • Before starting a new job, give your employer the blue or green certificate. Employers are not allowed to accept photocopies of your working papers. If you lose your working papers, you must return to the main office and request another.
  • The employer must return your working papers at the end of the job. You can use them for future employment (if you are still the right age for the certificate). Please request another in the main office if the employer does not return your working papers.
